Sambars are staple dish in South Indian homes. This dish can be prepared easily and time saving. Here I am sharing one such sambar dish with drumsticks i.e., drumstick sambar.

As I have used only drumsticks, sambar tastes little bitter and little sweet. Many sambar varieties can be prepared like mixed vegetable sambar, brinjal sambar and many. This dish is not only tasty but also provides nutrition to our body as toor dal is rich in protein and drumsticks are good for digestion.

Drumstick sambar

Sambars are served with thatte idli, idli, vada, pongal, dosa and rice. I have used homemade sambar powder. I always prefer to make powder at home as it gives perfect and the best taste. You can also use store bought powder as it is available in every store nowadays and also available online.

Ingredients

  • Drumsticks — 2 big
  • Toor dal — 1/2 cup
  • Water — 2 cups
  • Tomato — 1
  • Turmeric — 1/4 Tsp
  • Oil — 1/2 Tsp
  • Sambar powder — 4 Tbsp
  • Tamarind pulp — 1/4 cup
  • Salt — 2 Tsp
  • Curry leaves — few
  • Coriander — 2 Tbsp

Tempering

  • Oil — 2 Tsp
  • Mustard seeds — 1 Tsp
  • Urad dal — 1 Tsp
  • Hing — 1/4 Tsp

Steps to make drumstick sambar

  • Into cooker, add toor dal, turmeric, oil, tomato and water. Cook until soft.
  • Add drumsticks into a vessel,salt and cook separately(I do not add drumsticks into cooker as they become mushy).
  • Once drumsticks are cooked well, add sambar powder, tamarind pulp water and cook for 3–4 minutes.
  • After pressure releases naturally,open lid and cooker mash tomato. Add toor dal and mashed tomato to drumsticks.
  • Add coriander and curry leaves. Add salt.
  • Cook for 4-5 minutes.
  • For tempering add ingredients mentioned above fry them and add to sambar.
  • Drumstick sambar is ready to serve.
